Have you ever felt alone? Like no one understands? Abandoned? Like the last man standing? That seems to be David’s feeling in Psalm 12.
“Help, Lord, for the godly are no more, the faithful have vanished from among men.” (Psalm 12:1 NIV) David feels alone, standing his ground among unrighteousness. In verses 2-4 he tells some of what that wickedness is: lies, flattering, boasting, basically putting some down so others could be puffed up, and then claiming that God won’t do anything about it.
It was a time when David saw the weak being oppressed and the needy groaning for relief, and no one was helping. He felt helpless to give aid. It was a time much like today as the rich get richer, the powerful gain more power and no one who is able to help cares to do so.
But David sees some light shining in that dark place. “’I will arise, ‘says the Lord, ‘I will protect them from those who malign them’ And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times.” (vs 5-6 NIV) God promised to protect and God’s word is true, pure as the purest silver.
So what can we do when we feel like we’re alone, standing for right against the entire world? Pray! Seek God’s face. “O Lord, You will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever.” (vs 7 NIV) The safest place to be is in the center of God’s will. No matter what is happening in the world around us, God sees; He knows; He cares. We are NEVER alone.
