We all gravitate toward people with charisma. We like to hear a good speaker. But someone who speaks and follows it up with actions, that’s someone we can get behind.
Everywhere Jesus went the crowds gathered. He taught; He healed; He drove out demons. And people were drawn to Him.
Twice in Mark 1 the writer uses the word “authority.” In verse 22 he says, “The people were amazed at His teaching, because He taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.” (NIV) They stood there listening absorbed in what He said, because He seemed to truly know what He was talking about, not like their teachers.
The second time is in verse 27. Jesus had told a demon to be quiet and then to come out of the man. It obeyed! “The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, ‘What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey Him.’” (NIV) They had never seen anything like it before.
The same authority Jesus has bestowed on His followers. “All authority has been given to Me.” (Matthew 28:18 NIV) “But you will receive power.” (Acts 1:8 NIV) We have been given the power of the Holy Spirit to spread the Gospel of Christ. We have His authority to make disciples. A new teaching—and with authority!
