My Mother and Brothers – Mark 3

Family is important! God designed the family unit to care for and meet the needs of each member. He gives commands regarding families in Ephesians 5 and 6: “Husbands, love your wives,” (5:25 NIV) “Wives, submit to your husbands,” (5:22 NIV) and “Children obey your parents.” (6:1 NIV) Family is important to God.

Jesus was important to His family. They worried about Him. He had left the carpenter shop, after working there all His life, to go become an itinerate preacher. Now He was back in Galilee and had come to a house which had immediately become so packed with people wanting to touch Jesus, talk to Jesus, be healed by Jesus, that He and His followers were not even able to eat. Jesus family was concerned for His well-being and His sanity, so they went to check on Him and take Him home.

When His mother and brothers arrived, He was informed, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for You.” (vs 32 NIV) Jesus responded with a strange question which may have had His listeners also scratching their heads and wondering about His sanity: “Who are my mother and brothers?” (vs 33 NIV)

Jesus went on to explain. “He looked at those seated in a circle around Him and said ‘Here are My mother and My brothers. Whoever does God’s will is My brother and sister and mother.’” (vs 34-35 NIV) When we accept Jesus as Lord and follow Him, which is God’s will, we become part of the family of God. John 1:12 says, “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” (NIV) In Romans 8:16-17 Paul says, “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.” (NIV)

We know that Jesus brothers later believed in Him and became spiritual brothers as well as physical brothers. I look forward to meeting them some day.

I’m happy to be part of that forever family. I love the song “Family of God” by the Gaithers. “I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God—I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood! Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod, for I’m part of the family, the family of God.” Are you in Jesus family?
