Seek His Face – Psalm 27

On this Sunday morning, as I drink my coffee, listen to music praising the Lord, and reading my Bible, I am overwhelmed with who our God is. My heart, like David’s, overflows with worship and praise. And I’m excited to go to church to meet and fellowship with others who feel the same.

A few verses in this Psalm really stood our to me today. First is verse 4: “One thing I ask of the Lord; this is what I seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.” When Jesus was 12 years old and His parents took Him to Jerusalem, He stayed behind. When they found Him in the temple, He responded to their worried questioning of Him, “Didn’t you know I had to be in My Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49) If I have to miss church, I feel empty, like a part of my joy was taken from me. That’s as it should be. We should long to be in God’s house, with Him and His saints.

The second verse is verse 8: “My heart says of You, ‘Seek His face!’ Your face, Lord, I will seek.” Do you find joy in reading God’s Word, even those difficult books? Through reading and studying God’s Word, we learn who our God is. We learn His character, His justice, His grace, His judgement, His love, His salvation, all about Him. This is how we seek His face.

The third thing that struck me was verses 13-14: I am confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” There are days when looking around I see something that blesses me; we call those “God Sightings.” It could be an extra beautiful sunset, a butterfly, the smile of a baby or child, the song of a bird. It can be just about anything, it is seeing experiencing God’s goodness this side of heaven. I thank God for those glimpses of His love for me as I wait for His return or my going home.

Sunday is a good day to worship, praise, pray, read, meet together and see God. But so is every day. Worship Him, seek Him, observe all He’s doing and wait for Him.
